To be an 'ICON' the mantra is 'I CAN'

— Jayalakshmi Y M

I recently watched the movie "The Walk", based on true story of a French high-wire artist, Philippe Petit who realized his dream of walking between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York on August 7, 1974. Such dreams look crazy to most of us. However, Petit proved to the world that impossible things can also be achieved, if one has strong determination. The movie and Petit's life inspire, and make us realize that the attitude of I CAN is the mantra to become an ICON.

Some people think that they are doing most of the work when compared to others but are not getting the rewards like others. Also, they think that they are doing the work and others are getting the credit for it. This might not be true in all cases. If it is true, remember that one cannot always get the credit for others work as they might get caught in future.

If it is not true, realize the fact and analyze what that extra is required to become an extraordinary performer. Also, remember that comparison, to some extent is good as it helps in enhancing the performance by putting in more efforts. But in this process, you are forgetting that nobody in this world is similar and thus the capabilities, interests and goals differ from person to person. Here you may remember that you are unique and thus it is better to spend time in knowing your uniqueness rather than comparing with others. Bill Gates rightly said, "Don't compare yourself with anyone in this world...if you do so, you are insulting yourself."

We all dream and aim big in our lives. However, only a few could actually realize or achieve their goals and become icons for others. What is the major difference between them and rest of the dreamers? Dreamers just dream of achieving something without putting any effort towards achieving it, whereas achievers strive until they reach their goals. Most importantly, achievers have faith in themselves and their capabilities. This attitude of I can makes them to look at the victory/success that they are going to achieve and not the stumbling blocks that come in their path of success. Achievers have a proper vision, plan, and focus towards their goals. Always try to be like an achiever in your respective field. Realize that everyone can become an icon as each one of us is unique and is capable of doing something in life. Identify what it is that you are good at or want to do.

Your goal should be a SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely) goal. Analyze what is required to achieve your goal, how and in how much time it should be achieved etc. Brake your goal into small portions fixing a time frame for each of the steps. Start working towards your goal step by step, review your performance in between and check if there is any requirement for corrections. Also, appreciate yourself after completing each of the steps as it will boost your confidence.

At times, you might fail in achieving your goal in spite of putting in your best. It doesn’t mean that you failed. Remember Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam’s words, "If you fail, never give up because F.A.I.L. means "first Attempt In Learning. End is not the end, in fact E.N.D. means "Effort Never Dies. If you get No as an answer, remember N.O. means "Next Opportunity". So Let's be positive." Realize that even though we fail in doing something, we are gaining experience and knowledge. There are so many great people who continued their efforts towards reaching their goal in spite of challenges. Famous writer J K Rowling was once unemployed and her book "Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone Potter" was rejected by 12 publishers before it was finally accepted. But today, Harry Potter series is one of the world's most popular characters in fiction. American film producer, director, screenwriter, voice actor, animator, entrepreneur, entertainer, international icon and philanthropist, Walter Elias Disney was initially fired by an editor of a newspaper because "he lacked imagination and had no good ideas."

Later, Disney started a number of businesses that didn't last long and ended with bankruptcy. But then, he didn't lose his heart. He kept trying and finally found success. Abraham Lincoln was defeated many times and experienced personal tragedies but was elected as President of the United States at the age of 51. Amitabh Bachchan was initially rejected as a radio anchor in an audition test by All India Radio but today he is considered as one of the greatest and most influential actors in the history of Indian cinema. There is a hidden lesson from these examples. These achievers always believed in themselves and were sure of achieving success in their subsequent attempts. They continued their efforts in spite of a failure, as they strongly believe that failure brings with it an opportunity to start an activity or thing more intelligently. Thus success certainly followed them for their sincere efforts. Also, they stood as icons of inspiration for everyone.

If one would like to win but think he can’t, it is certain that he won’t win. It all depends upon one’s attitude of thinking either positive or negative. An optimist always sees an opportunity in every problem and a pessimist sees a problem in every opportunity. Now it is all up to you. If you want to be an optimist and achieve your desired goal or be a pessimist and doesn’t even make an attempt fearing a failure. If you choose to be an optimist, you can not only create wonders but also become an icon for others. Here are a few tips that aid in building the attitude of ‘I can’.

• Believe in yourself and in your potential. Always think positively in all circumstances and visualize your future success.
• Always get inspired by the success stories of great people as they aid in motivating yourself.
• Decide your goal after thorough analysis, then try to know what is required and how to achieve your goal.
• Frequently evaluate your progress and check if you are heading towards your goal or deviating from it. Also, modify your strategy or plan if required.
• Do not get disheartened by failures. Consider them as learning opportunities as they show you the path to reach your goals or attain success. Hence use them as a ladder for reaching your goals.
• Be with positive people instead of negative people. Negative peoples’ company makes you doubt in your own ability whereas positive peoples’ company reduces stress levels and enhances your confidence levels.
• Be encouraging with yourself. Always motivate yourself and think that you can achieve anything. The word impossible itself says that I am possible.
• Read about positive thinking and remind yourself with your prior achievements.
• Refresh yourself with some of your favourite hobbies such as listening to music, reading books, watching television, walking, exercising etc.
• Look at the sunny side of everything and believe that all is well.

Always remember that nobody becomes an ICON overnight as one might need to put in so much effort to reach that stage. Also, realize that when others can achieve success why can’t you achieve? Kick the T out from the word CAN’T and prove to the world that one CAN achieve anything in this world and become an ICON to everyone.
